Why Drunk Driving Kills

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, people kept indoors. The curfew and lockdowns limited people’s movement. If anything, people drunk at home. There was little movement and drinking was limited to the confines of your compound. The impact is that drunk driving reduced by 100%. Drunk drivers were completely eliminated from the road.

When the curfew was lifted and movement restored, drunk driving cases sparked. More than 10 people were killed in a single day. A drunk driver along Thika Road killed two people who were coming from a wedding. The cases rose such that they competed with Covid-19 mortalities.

How alcohol affects driving ability?

Alcohol affects the functional duties of the brain. It impairs human thinking and judgment. A drunk driver will not differentiate between high and low speed. Also, poor judgment causes accidents. A drunk driver will not see the need for braking down when near another car. The reasoning of a person when drunk is quite different. Al they think about is reaching home. In terms of muscle coordination, the mind may work on braking, but the foot is already on the gas. These uncoordinated movements affect the safe operations of an automobile.

When the level of alcohol in a person’s system increases, the level of the same on the central nervous system increase too. Alcohol is absorbed through the stomach and intestine linings and into the blood. Alcohol is measured in terms of Blood Alcohol Concentration. A BAC of 0.08 grams of alcohol per deciliter increases accident risk.
