Covid-19 and Alcohol: Myths and Facts

Do you have form? What comes to your mind when you get to hear these words? ‘Form’ is a slang word for plan. In the word plan, there is alcohol. The words have been widely used during the Covid-19 period when most people were at home. Job losses have led to the rise of ‘forms’ all across the country and the world. The biggest downfall of ‘form’ means that people have become alcoholics.

Myth:

Alcohol treats Covid-19.

Facts:

Ethyl alcohol or ethanol is the substance that is present in almost all alcoholic drinks. It is present in wine, whisky, rum, beer, spirits, and brandy. Other substances such as methanol are added to alcohol illegally and they cause massive side-effects. Methanol can lead to blindness, kidney problems among others. Alcohol suppresses the immune system of a person and it does not make you resistant to Covid-19. Therefore, having many ‘forms’ in a day will not prevent you from being infected with Covid-19. In fact, when you get drunk, you forget about the mask, social distancing and you become totally vulnerable to contracting the virus.

Myth:

Consuming alcohol kills the Covid-19 virus

Facts:

Alcohol is effective when used as a disinfectant. Consuming alcohol does not kill the virus. Ingestion will only lower your immunity.

Myth:

Drinking strong alcohol kills the virus when inhaled through air

Fact:

Alcohol does not disinfect the air that you breathe through your nose and mouth.

What you should not do with alcohol during the Covid-19 Pandemic

  • Avoid drinking in groups. These groups make you vulnerable to contracting the virus. The more you drink, the more you lose the meaning in life. You will lose your mask and all the social distance rules. In any case, you should drink carefully.
  • Drink minimally and keep your senses
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking. The more you smoke, the more you will drink. Smoking involves much of sharing and makes you vulnerable to Covid-19.
  • Do not consume alcohol and medication. Drinking alcohol and taking drugs will overwork your liver. You will be more vulnerable to getting sick since the medicine may not work.
